Anlass hierzu gab das von der Königlich-Preußischen Akademie der Wissenschaften ausgesetzte Preisausschreiben zu welchem d’Alembert eine Schrift verfasste Réflexions sur la cause générale des vents. Mit ihr war er auch bestrebt, in der Berliner Akademie als Mitglied aufgenommen zu werden. Pierre-Louis Moreau de Maupertuis beriet ihn bei seinem Vorhaben und so verfasste er zu seiner Schrift in lateinischer Sprache ein Widmungsgedicht an den preußischen König. Doch blieb die direkte Antwort Friedrichs II. aus, vielmehr antwortete an seiner statt Jean-Baptiste de Boyer, Marquis d’Argens. Als d’Alembert dann im Jahre 1751 seinen Discours préliminaire de l'Encyclopédie publiziert hatte, trat Friedrich II. nunmehr in Kontakt zu dem Autor und überließ ihm von nun an eine Pension von 1200 Livres auf Lebzeiten. Im Sommer des Jahres 1763 reiste d'Alembert zu einem dreimonatigen Aufenthalt auf Schloss Sanssouci. Während seines Potsdamaufenthaltes besuchte er Leonhard Euler in Berlin. Euler war 1741 von Friedrich II. an die Königlich-Preußische Akademie der Wissenschaften berufen worden die er 1766 verließ und zurück nach St. Petersburg ging, wo Katharina die Große seit 1762 als Kaiserin von Russland residierte. Der preußische König bot d’Alembert eine Position als Präsident der Königlich-Preußischen Akademie der Wissenschaften an und obgleich d’Alembert zeitweise unschlüssig war, ob er seinen Lebensmittelpunkt nach Preußen verlegen sollte, nahm er von dem Angebot abstand.
