Altar

ist der Einrichtung der Freimaurerlogen ursprünglich fremd. Erst gegen Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts wird es gebräuchlich, die Hauptsymbole der Loge, Bibel, Zirkel und Winkel, an besonders betonter Stelle aufzulegen. In deutschen Logen ist der Altar zumeist der Meistertisch. In englischen und amerikanischen Logen ist der Altar oft in Form eines kubischen Steins gewöhnlich in der Mitte der Loge aufgestellt und von den drei kleinen Lichtern flankiert. Am Altar werden die Gelöbnisse der Freimaurerei abgelegt. Ebenso werden Brüder, denen eine besondere Ehrung zugedacht wird, vor den Altar gerufen.

In Mackey's Encyclopedia of Freemasonry heisst es: Das wichtigste Möbelstück in einem Logenraum ist zweifellos der Altar. Es lohnt sich also, seinen Charakter und seine Beziehung zu den Altären der anderen religiösen Institutionen zu untersuchen.
