1844, amerikanischer General und Polarforscher, Ehrenpräsident des New Yorker "Explorers-Club", nahm an der amerikanischen Polarexpedition 1882 teil, wurde durch die Hilfsexpedition Schley gerettet, leitete dann den Bau wichtiger Kabel nach den Philippinen, China, Kuba usw., Verfasser meteorologischer und elektrotechnischer Werke, Mitglied der Kane Lodge.
